Fingal Chamber welcomes MetroLink approval as ‘once-in-a-generation opportunity’
Fingal Chamber has welcomed today’s decision by An Coimisiún Pleanála to grant the Railway Order for MetroLink, describing it as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver faster, greener and more reliable public transport for Fingal, Dublin and the wider region.
The approval clears the way for procurement and construction of the 19km, fully automated metro service linking Swords, Dublin Airport, Ballymun, Glasnevin and the city centre. With capacity for 20,000 passengers per hour in each direction, MetroLink will cut journey times from Swords to the city centre to just 25 minutes.
Fingal Chamber members have consistently identified MetroLink as a critical project to support business growth, reduce congestion and unlock housing delivery. With Fingal’s population expected to rise by more than 70,000 by 2031, the Chamber says the project is vital to meeting the county’s housing, workforce and connectivity needs.
MetroLink will also place Fingal at the centre of Ireland’s largest public transport investment to date. It will directly connect to Dublin Airport – the country’s global gateway – and integrate with DART, Luas, bus and rail networks, strengthening Dublin’s competitiveness as a European capital and reinforcing Fingal’s role as a hub for enterprise and employment.
Anthony Cooney, Chief Executive of Fingal Chamber, said:
“MetroLink directly addresses the transport and housing challenges highlighted by our members. It will reduce congestion, support climate targets and open up new housing opportunities along its route. Fingal Chamber will continue to champion its delivery to ensure these benefits are fully realised for our businesses and communities.”
Fingal Chamber has consistently highlighted transport and infrastructure as top priorities for local businesses. MetroLink will:
Support housing delivery by enabling compact, well-serviced communities
Boost competitiveness by cutting congestion and improving access to Dublin Airport
Create skills and jobs during both construction and operation, with long-term benefits for Fingal’s workforce
Advance sustainability by providing a high-capacity alternative to car travel
Mr Cooney concluded:
“MetroLink is more than a transport project – it is a catalyst for growth, sustainability and quality of life. Fingal Chamber will work with Government, Fingal County Council and all stakeholders to ensure this milestone translates into lasting benefits for our region.”
